I just passed the P.I. exam
I'm thankful to the other three who left reviews of this book and said it was helpful for the P.I exam. I studied all the B&P codes, etc., recommended by the licensing board to prep for the exam as well. I found this book gave a great overall view of the P.I. business and its legal considerations. It mentioned the types of agencies and specific agency names where you would be gathering information. It was a well organized book. The second half is all the code sections which would apply to someone doing P.I. work. This book is a confidence builder for those making the transition from law enforcement or other fields, into the P.I. world. Now that I passed the exam I will be keeping it on hand as a valuable reference/ refresher. Good luck to you all. 2008-07-21

Decent Starting Point
I used this book in studying to take the California Private Investigator exam. so I read it very closely. I am also an attorney. I found the book helpful but there are several instances where the analysis is incomplete, making it difficult to determine whether particular conduct is permitted. There also some assertions about the law which I do not believe are entirely accurate. Finally, not to nitpick but there are also typographical errors in the book. In sum, this book is best used as a starting point for recognizing potential legal issues for private investigators to then discuss with an attorney. 2008-03-29

A must have
If you are studying for the California PI test there are few reference items available. This book is the perfect study guide and resource for the test. It takes you through all the releveant testing information. 2007-05-13

The Private Investigator's Legal Manual
This book is a God-send for people who are looking for study material prior to taking the test, for new Private Investigators just entering the profession, and for the experienced Private Investigator who is expanding into a new area of practice. In all my research, this is the only source that explains what a Private Investigator can do and what they can't do, based on case law as well as explaining the liabilities associated with PI work. Well done! 2006-03-16
