Why this?
I was so excited about the book! Read all the ones before I was 500% IN LOVE! Happy thoughts all over! Then I read it.
What a waste!
What utter rubbish!
I feel so upset and in a way betrayed. Could I go to bed after reading this? No! I was livid! She made little or no sense with her plot and character development. Some people call the plot non-stop action but seriously, it was just random things happening for no reason. This caused the book to be very disjointed and lacking in coherence. It was as if a child were writing, the plot jumped around left, right and center. There was no consistency with the other books. The end was without doubt the worst part of the book. What exactly was accomplished? To what end. There was absolutely no direction in the book. The wit, charm, intellect that I expected from Merry series was no where to be seen. It would have been better if she said the book would come out in 5 years than give us this senseless mash of plots. Indeed it would have been better if she had said that book 6 was the last. I would have been frustrated but I would have preferred that to this. I want my money back.

A big improvement
I actually like this book a lot, which is surprising since her last few books are such disappointments. The major improvements in this book are a lot less sex scenes (I think one sex scene out of the whole book), and lots of plots, although a bit jumbled. In this book, Meredith got pregnant, toughen up, and do what needs to be done to protect her people. The author tied up a few subplots that had been dragging on for a while, like solving the murder of her father, etc.
I heard other reviewers mentioned this may be the last book of the series, and the book does seem to indicate that in the last chapter. However, it would be a major disappointment if it is. The whole point of the series is for Meredith to be pregnant, bring magic back to fairy, and become queen. Well, Meredith did become pregnant, but is still not queen of the dark court. Her uncle and aunt are still king and queen of the light and dark court, and still gunning for her. Questions such as, will she remain mortal while everyone around her immortal, even with the goddess's favor and magical power? What about the red caps who risked so much to come to her aid? What happen to the dark court as they continue to defy their goddess and her consort by refusing Meredith the throne?
The author's website didn't mention if this is the last book, but I hate to wait another year to find the answer.

Upsetting and Disappointing
It seems that in this book, Hamilton has grown tired of this series. Everything seems rushed and in the last few books, it was kind of like that too.
After reading this book, it seems that all the things Merry has done and gone through has been for nothing. It is a bitter disappointment and it seems that there isn't a lot of thought put into how to give the big finale.
All in all, Swallowing Darkness seems a little bit too dry, too rushed, and too little of most things. I am pretty sure that this will be one of the few books that I will put on the shelf and refuse to read it in the future.
This book was almost too bitter to swallow.

Am finally done with LKH
Okay, I had already given up on the Anita series, but I stuck it out with this series because I really liked the last book. I'm now done. Unless it falls off a truck in front of me and I have nothing else to read and I'm tied to a bed and - I think you get the picture. I actually returned this one to the store. 2008-11-21

Swallowing Darkness
This is by far one of the best Merry Gentry books. I have been so disappointed in the last 3 or so that I wasn't sure I wanted to read this one. There was actually closure to so many open story lines that LKH kept on dragging out through her books. I'm actually excited for the next book.... Something I haven't felt about LKH's writing in a long time. 2008-11-20
