The best TCP/IP illustration I have ever read
The book does a great job in illustrating how different layers of TCP/IP protocol work together. Great read and I will also buy his other books (Advanced UNIX Programing, Advanced UNIX network programming tec.) to gain deeper understanding at the code level. 2001-01-10

A classic hands-on approach to TCP/IP...
TCP/IP Illustrated Vol 1 is an indispensible tool to any network administrator. Rich Stevens was an excellent communicator and it clearly showed in this book. I don't know if he realized how much of an impact he has made in the networking community. I learned the basics of TCP/IP by reading this book and working out the example problems with tcpdump. This book has played an important role in my development as a computing professional. I can't recommend this book enough if you are interested in learning about how the protocols that the Internet operates over actually works. This book is worth every penny. I also recommend Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment by the same author. 2001-01-01

Inspired Engineering Textbook
Excellent for network administrators, programmers, and system administrators alike. Absolutely superb description from the ground up of what actually happens on IP networks. After reading this book, whenever you have a network problem, your first inclination will be to reach for a sniffer...:-) 2000-12-02

I've owned this book for years and still use it often
Its said that a well designed product is one that is not only of immediate benefit to the user, but also one that grows in sophistication with the user, to a point where its functionality evolves over time to become a part of the user.I bought my first copy of this book years ago. I forget how many copies I've had over the years. I've bought copies for countless young protocol engineers and support fellows.
I crack this baby open almost weekly.

this book is THE shit
this book rocks. i own just about every reference book a unix admin could have, and i use tcp/ip vol. 1 more often than any other. it's dog-eared, highlighted, and covered with pizza grease and coke stains. if your a sun admin then you also need a copy of Adrian Cockcroft's book. with these two books in hand you are one with God. and Mr. Steven's, wherever you are right now, the unix admins of the world thank you for making a bad-ass book. 2000-09-03
