I want more!
I was sad when this book ended. Actually I did not read this book, I listened to the audio book version. When the book begins, it seems that there is no hope for humans, but as the story goes on it is apparent that hope can never be lost completely and this book actually has a happy ending.
I was sad when this story was over and I already miss the characters. I hope Meyers writes the sequal soon.

When does it get going?
When does this book get going? So for it has been the most boring book I have read and I am more than half way through it. I have no connection to the characters or their ordeal. I am very disappointed. 2008-12-08

imanginative
This book is interesting & imaginative, but not the type of book you can't put down. I'm reading it in chunks of time. I advise that you get this book from the library, not buy it. I haven't read the Twilight series yet, but perhaps it is better. This is Meyer's first "adult" book.
The concept of aliens taking over human bodies is not new, & this book is about a woman who has an alien implanted in her brain. She's not able to give up her body & mind, so currently, at the point I am in the book, she is somewhat accepted in a real human conclave, in which the "pure" humans are hiding from the aliens. The aliens who take over humans are peaceful, & when they take a body, the owner gets pushed back into a remote part of the brain & the alien takes over. Basically, the world is now peaceful with "implanted humans", but there are little patches of un-implanted humans all over the world.(you can tell who's implanted & who's not by the eyes) I am interested in how it ends, but not interested enough to put aside another FASCINATING book I'm reading, "Rocking The Babies".

AMAZING AND STILL A WHOLE DIFFERENT STORY FROM TWILIGHT
After reading Twilight I knew that I wanted to read everything by Meyer, but I had no idea how wonderful and yet still different she could be. When I find an author I enjoy, I like to read all of their books, and generally speaking it's the same story with different characters and background. But The Host was such a completely different story from the Twilight books. Meyer still continues with her amazing style, however, the story itself could have come from a completely different author. Her writing for this novel feels like it is aimed at a different audience from her other books. The only thing I didn't like is the happily ever after ending. Still good, but kind of too good to be true. 2008-12-04

Wished it was better
Stephenie Meyer could have done more with this story. I found that nearly the entire first half of the book was a bit boring even when they got to Jeb's camp. It was only a while later that the story actually got really intriguing. Meyer was able to give a fleshed out, interesting idea of the souls, though. The conflict and relationship between Wanda and Melanie was also good. However, much of the fun in the book was the romance. I can't say I didn't enjoy it, but I'd expected to get more out of the storyline itself. Too many authors resort to romance in their books to get readers to enjoy it. I just wish she'd done more with the story, especially since it was supposed to be a 'psychological thriller', according to the back of the book. I think most readers will still enjoy it, particularly those who have been following the Twiloght series. 2008-12-04
