A Good Change
First, this is not the last book.
Second, I find those that trash her writing funny, especially those with mindless opinions. Why keep buying her book and supporting her if you hate the books so much.
My opinion, this was really good. In the begining, people didn't like all the sex. HELLO, the story was about getting pregnant and taking over the thrown. You kinda gotta have sex for that. I will admit I was utterly pisted about the multiple fathers. I felt it was a cop out of choosing one. I personally was happy to see frost go, though I am a die hard Doyle fan. I was a Mistral fan until this book and though I still like him, not as much. Sholto I was indifferent about, but he is running neck and neck for me with Doyle now. It is reiterated over and over how Merry is not full blooded Fae and i think that is where all her emotions come from. I think it makes her real in a fantasy world. To me, this book was none stop. One clifhanger after another after another. The wild hunt - AWESOME - the marriage - AWESOME - Cel - WHOA! - the slaugh - COOL - the crowing - VERY COOL - the denial - A LITTLE SHOCKING. The sexual tensionin in this one was a bit reminesent of her first books. LOVED IT! The last book kinda pissed me off in more ways the one...the sign of a good writer if you ask me...but I think she made up for it a little in this one and can't wait to see what comes of the marriage, the crown, the queen, the babies, the daddies, the rape and all that good stuff. I highly recomend it.
By the way, I am dead tired, so this is not spelled checked, sorry.

More Merry
More of the princess and her guards. I was a bit disappointed with the latest in LKH's continuing series and am losing interest in both Anita Blake and Merry Gentry. What has happened to writing a plausible plot? I've had just about enough multiple sex partners and rehashed verbal style that I could have read in an earlier novel by Ms Hamilton. I say this now, but will still probably read the latest Anita book, even if it's in audio format. 2008-12-11

Great followthru!!
This is in no way the last of these books, way too many cliffhangers for that!! I love how this author always manages to leave a bit to chance at the end of a novel...then makes you wait another year!!!! LOL!!! At lease we get to read another Anita Blake soon!! Love ya Laurell!! 2008-12-10

Swallowing is Not the End
I have totally quit reading reading reviews of Hamilton's work because I don't think some people are actually reading the same books I am. I have enjoyed Hamilton's work since Kiss of Shadows - the first Merry Gentry book. Up until this time, I hadn't read anything by her, but his quickly changed. Although Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter is my favorite series, Merry runs a close second!
Swallowing Darkness picks up right where A Lick of Frost ended. Merry has been raped by her uncle, King Taranis, and her beloved Frost has been turned into a stag. I was shocked with the opening scene because my joy at having "Gran" reenter the picture was quickly changed to horror because of a vengeance spell.
I was not expecting the Wild Hunt so soon after the last, but with Merry's kin plotting her murder and her uncles sadistic actions, I guess it was an obvious conclusion.
I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around Merry's pregnancy with twins and the huge number of men who share paternity. This is my problem, not Hamilton's problem - her writing is up to snuff, I'm just having trouble with several issues. I am happy to see the "mother bear" instincts rise up in Merry - after spending 6 books trying to get pregnant, I was wondering how she would react to the pregnancy.
For me, Swallowing Darkness answered some major plot points, but there are so many more questions to be answered. This is NOT the last Merry Gentry book, as so many other reviewers have claimed. According to Hamilton's website and blog (which I read faithfully every day), Merry's story is not finished, so the series goes on. Yeah for us die-hard Hamilton fans!
