Heat Lightning (Virgil Flowers)

Anyone who's read the Lucas Davenport Series will understand the title. I love John Sandford's books. He keeps you guessing right to the end and you can't put them down. Can't wait for the next one. Definitely recommend this book.

This book is an excellent example of the genre that John Sandford has clearly mastered.

As a past loyal John Sanford fan, this book was a disappointment. The plot seemed to go on and on as though Mr. Sanford was adding and making it up as he went. Light on plot, he was heavy on obscenities and sexist views of woman. Does Vigil Flowers (or any man in this book) have a conversation with a woman without sexual overtones? After a while it was tiring and insulting. If this is the direction of Mr. Sanford's work, I will think long and hard before I pick up his next book.

A long-time fan of the Prey series with Lucas Davenport, I was unsure about this line extension featuring Virgil Flowers. Sometimes authors depart from the tried and true at their peril. Having read Dark of the Moon and now Heat Lightning, it is clear that Sandford has another winning character who can easily stand on his own and carry a story. Flowers' character continues to develop in this book into a very likeable hero: intelligent, tough, and tenacious. The supporting cast is strong, the plot thoroughly believable and action packed. Simply put, Heat Lightning is a great read. I strongly recommend this work (although it will be better if you read Dark of the Moon first).

I think I have read most of John Sandfords books. I have not been disappointed yet.
