Vonnegut is a Funny Man
I liked this group of essays very much. Even though I consider Vonnegut one of the best writers writing (until very recentl) today, I don't read him very often. As anyone knows who has read Vonnegut, he presents, even in his fiction, very serious subjects. However, I tend to forget that he has a wonderful sense of humor. In my opinion it is his sense of humor carries me into his serious ideas and forces me to appreciate them more than I would if he were strictly one of the many gloom and doom writers. This group of essays brings that idea home again and again. Perhaps I laugh at the wrong things, but I shall be reading this book several more times, especially as Bush shrivels and blows away. 2007-05-16

Read. It. Now.
The review on the back of the book says so already, but I just want to reiterate that the tone of this book is like you are sitting on the couch having a conversation with a wise old sage. Since Vonnegut has passed, none of us have a chance of actually meeting him anymore. This is the closest it gets. The man was a fount of wisdom, useful for every day life and politically elightening. There are a lot of little lines and quotes that will stick with you forever; There is nothing forgettable about this work. It is personal and darkly hilarious, while still being a very easy read that only took me about 2 hours. I read it twice in one night because I just couldn't stop. You won't regret buying this book. Vonnegut was a genius and you would regret missing this chance at a conversation with an American hero. 2007-05-15

AMAZING, amazing, amazing!!!
I was drawn to this book from its first sentence until the very last! It is just an incredibly amazing memoir about Mr. Vonnegut's thoughts of life on nature, God and human behavior. It is written in his unique way of mixing humor with reality, history and politics. I found myself both laughing and nodding in agreement to almost every single line in the book. There are several passages that I will keep in my mind forever that are very eye-opening. A Man Without a Country has really been an inspiration for me and I'm glad I read it. This book is a fun, insightful and entertaining read for everyone. I extremely recommend anyone to read it. It is just amazing -for lack of a better word. 2007-05-14

little time to read, but stays with you
if you are looking for a quick and funny book to read, look to this wonderful gem. Funny, insightful, and important. It stays with you as long as you live, though it only takes a few hours to read. Kurt is as close to the truth as if he has been in the room when god started the ball rolling. perfect book to remind us we are thinking people and not chimps. 2007-05-13

Brilliant!
America has lost one of its finest writers ever. I loved this book and this sharing of observations from Kurt Vonnegut's life. Vonnegut's vision and opinions in this book are something everyone should consider and try to figure into their own lives. Two thumbs way up Mr. Vonnegut.
Kurt Vonnegut was one of my favorite writers. He passed away April 11, 2007. I enjoyed Vonnegut because of his broad view and perspective of the world and how it works. He said, "I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center."
I was introduced to Kurt at an early age. Harrison Bergeron is still my second favorite short-story. I first read it in fifth grade. I believe that anyone who reads Vonnegut is better for it.
My Acrostic Tribute to Vonnegut:
Vignettes of you before me - pages of pictures and words
Outweighing voices and visions - but his were for the birds
Nibbling at the pieces - bits and crumbs to satiate the hungry masses
No one but Kurt to remind "The Man" that he should come and kiss our ___,
Eat dirt and crow and maybe crap, then as our days soon reveal -
Graze the world for all she has with no time left to heal -
Unless those words of Vonnegut spread - heard plainly like a drum:
The more truth we have to work with, the richer we become.
