Taylor's basics on handguns
I've become a Chuck Taylor fan after reading this book. I was a novice shooter when I got the book (but an experienced trainer in another field), I liked his approach, and his opinions are grounded. I got this and Massad Ayoob's (same title, 5th edition), and I definitely lean more towards Taylor than Ayoob.
Taylor is very strong with his opinions, and that comes across, but he soundly backs it up, and I ended up agreeing with him. I also like his writing style--very direct and readable. If I can make it happen, I will get some training from him.

Outdated at this time
Good read for older gun owners. Good overall compared to newer versions. 2005-10-12

Much more than I expected!
Looks like Massad Ayoob hits another one outta the park!
I find myself buying more and more books just because he's the author, and so far I haven't been disappointed. Based on the title, I was expecting mostly instructions/drills for combat shooting, but he does a pretty darn good job of covering all the bases for those interested in firearms for self-defense.
Maybe instead of gun locks (or in addition to?), all guns should come with a copy of this book!

The Definitive Bible for Handgun Owners
This book is the definitive guide for novice or veteran gun owners alike. The author was/is a LEO, a trainer, a lecturer, and a writer. The author clearly demonstrates his ability to write about this topic not only from his extensive experience with hundreds of weapons, ammunition, and personal situations (Over his 30 years in Law Enforcment)but also from the personal experiences and opinions of his collegues.
The author takes the reader through all the topics necessary for new gun owners. Topics well covered are history and usage of the revolver and pistol, legal fallout and controversies (When and why you can use your weapon), close quarter combat techniques, real life senarios (From personal experiences), practice techniques, competitions, gun selection, ammo selection, marksmanship, and accessories.
If you had to choose one book, or just your first book to get a thorough primer on the subject of guns and gun ownership you should start with this one.
After reading one of Massad's book, you will more than likely be looking for more of his books.

Great book
This was an excellent book. It fullfilled its name by covering almost all the aspects to combat handgunnery. I especially liked Ayoob's humerous writing style and how he examined both sides of controversial issues. Word of advice: try and buy it used, as the price is a little steep. 2003-08-25
