Full of fun projects!
We love this book; it has so many projects and a large variety of medium. I also love the way the projects are marked for difficulty, very clear. There is also a chart at the beginning of the book that gives you an overview of all of the projects with all the information you would need to find just the kind of project you want to do; whether it's a certain artist, difficulty level, art medium, etc. that you are looking for, it's easy to find. There are no color pictures in the book, but to be quite honest I don't even notice, it's such a great resource. 2005-09-14

Great for Kids and young adults
I homeschool my first grader and was in search of an art book to use in class. This book gives a little history on the artist and then an art lesson. I went through the whole book and made a list of supplies and have them ready when we do an art project.
Great book!

Teach kids art history through art
This book provides tons of great activities for kids, all based on famous art and artists. Some of the projects are very technical (make egg tempera) while others are purely creative. Some are very artist-specific (a wood block print for Durer) while others could be pertinent to a number of artists (Mother and Baby for Raphael).
If I have one complaint about the book, it is that all of the artists are Rennaissance or later. It would have been nice to go a bit further back, to ancient and even prehistoric art.
Each project includes biographical information and fun facts about the artist (and his times and works). Supplemented by a few nice picture books of the works being described (the illustrations in the book are black and white line drawings), it would make a great component of an art curriculum.

Best of the Best
I'm reviewing several of Kohl's books today, and this one is my favorite. Easy, common materials, creative, open=ended, and based on kids trying out the styles and techniques of the great masters from the Renaissance to the Present. I've learned so much! I love the little biographies because they usually tell something about the artist's life as a child. This is for allllllll ages. Including ME (age withheld). 2005-04-25

Great Ideas
I purchased this book to have ideas for teaching art to Primary Grade Students. I love the connection from artists to style. I have found a few that while the project is a great idea it does not connect well to the artists style, Salvadore Dali, for example. This aside I love the book and have produced several of my own art pieces as examples for students. If you are using it in the classroom I strongly recommend trying out the projects prior to using them with children. This has given me some ideas about what is acutally doable with children versus what really won't work in a classroom (versus one-on-one at home). I'm very excited the book was made and hope the authors write another. 2005-04-11
